Many of us will remember the May Altars where we expressed and celebrated our devotion to Our Lady in a particular way throughout the month of May. Our devotion to Mary, the mother of Jesus, has a special place in our tradition. Today many radio stations will play that familiar hymn QUEEN OF THE MAY. The words and music bring so many memories to our minds and hearts. As we contemplate Mary’s humble and generous heart, her courage and faith in God’s plan for her and for humanity, we honour her with heartfelt prayer. At this time of profound suffering we pray to Mary who stood by the cross as her son was dying to accompany us in our time of need. We pray in a special way for all who are sick and for those who are caring for them. We remember all those who have died and their loved oneswho grieve so deeply for them.
Pope Francis published a Letter looking towards the Month of May, dedicated especially to Mary. The Pope writes: “contemplating the face of Christ with the heart of Mary our Mother will make us even more united as a spiritual family and will help us overcome this time of trial”. We join with the Pope’s prayer for all who suffer because of the current pandemic. He prayed to Mary: “Comfort those who are distraught and mourn their loved ones who have died, and at times are buried in a way that grieves them deeply. Be close to those who are concerned for their loved ones who are sick and who, in order to prevent the spread of the disease, cannot be close to them. Fill with hope those who are troubled by the uncertainty of the future and the consequences for the economy and employment”
Someone made a great suggestion that we could pray the rosary in our homes at the same time throughout the month of May. Let’s try to do this each evening at 7.30p.m. Althoughwe are apart, we can remain in a solidarity of prayer and hope.
Queen of Heaven, rejoice, alleluia. For he, whom you were worthy to bear, alleluia. Has risen as he said, alleluia. Pray for us to God, alleluia. Rejoice and be glad, O Virgin Mary, alleluia. For the Lord is truly risen, alleluia.
